LinuxCon Europe starts with new and upgraded members

At the start of LinuxCon Europe 2012, currently being held in Barcelona, the Linux Foundation has announced that both Citrix and HP have moved up the membership hierarchy of the organisation. The foundation has also announced four new members, which are all cloud service and hosting companies.

HP has moved from gold to platinum membership – this is the highest level that is offered by the organisation that supports the development of Linux. Calling Linux "a strategic asset for all major technology company's", HP VP Eileen Evans said the move was designed to "maximize our investment in Linux". Citrix has also moved up the membership hierarchy from silver to gold status; the company is the driving force behind Xen and is also strongly involved in the development of the Apache CloudStack cloud management software. The company plans on increasing its participation in the Linux Foundation Labs, workgroups, events and other activities.

The Linux Foundation also announced four new members that all operate in the cloud computing sector. Cloudscaling describes itself as an "elastic cloud infrastructure company" for private cloud deployments based on OpenStack. CloudSigma is a cloud service provider that virtualises via KVM and offers highly detailed configuration options for cloud instances. Software company Cloudsoft offers solutions for managing applications across different clouds. The fourth new member is DreamHost, a popular web hosting service that which also offers cloud computing services.
