Linux from Scratch logo The Linux From Scratch project has released version 6.5 of its step-by-step instructions on how to create your own Linux system from scratch. The 300 pages of instructions show how to obtain the source code components and then compile your own 32-bit Linux system. LFS 6.5 has been updated to cover building a system using Linux kernel version 2.6.30.2 with GCC 4.4.1 and version 2.10.1 of glibc. LFS requires you already have a Linux system running to do the compilation and assembly of your own DIY Linux. Other updates to 6.5 are listed in the What's new since the last release page of the book.

The DIY Linux guide is designed to help users get a deeper understanding of how Linux works, by demonstrating how the components of a distribution work together and depend on each other. LFS also tells users how to create their own smaller distributions. Instructions are given for sub-100MB installations (described as "not hard") and for stripped down systems as small as a 5MB installation. Linux From Scratch is complemented by Beyond Linux From Scratch which moves on from the base system to cover various other packages and how to install them, along with other sub-projects including a LiveCD project and a security hardening guide.
