Linux emergency SystemRescueCd updated

The SystemRescueCD developers have announced the release of version 1.2.0 of their Linux distribution. The latest release of this lean system, mainly intended for administrative tasks, such as recovering data after a system crash, includes a wide range of software updates. The release uses the 2.6.29 Linux kernel and version 1.5.3 of X.org server which improves the distribution's hardware support. On the desktop, the developers replaced Joe's Window Manager (JWM) with a lean version of the already light-weight Xfce graphical environment.

The SystemRescueCd is based on the Gentoo Live CD and supports a wide variety of file systems including Ext2, Ext3 and Ext4, ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, VFAT, NTFS, ISO9660 and the recent Btrfs. It comes with tools like the GNU Parted partitioning tool, sfdisk, and Partimage, a program which saves partitions in image files and can restore these if required. Also included is a new version of FSArchiver, a program which can copy NTFS partitions. It also allows the target partition to be smaller than the original.
