Developer Neil Brown has announced the release of a new version of mdadm. The tool is used for creating, assembling, reporting on and monitoring Linux Software RAID arrays. Version 3.0 of mdadm can now handle metadata updates entirely in the userspace, which allows it to support formats that the kernel doesn't know about. Currently, the tool supports DDF (Comon RAID Disk Data Format), the SNIA standard format, as well as Intel Matrix, used by recent Intel ICH controllers.

Mdam 3.0 supports externally managed metadata 'containers' – collections of (physical) devices that have a common set of metadata. The containers can include one or more data arrays which are composed of slices (partitions). Mdadm will start an program called 'mdmon' for each container that will monitor the array and will update the metadata as needed.

Should the udev device manager be installed on a system, mdadm will allow it to manage any devices in /dev. However, if udev is not installed, mdadm will create devices and symlinks as needed and will remove them if the RAID array is disabled.
