Linux Mint project lead developer Clement Lefebvre has announced the release of a new version of his Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) distribution. Based on the 3.2 Linux kernel, LMDE 201204 offers a choice of Cinnamon 1.4, version 1.2 of MATE (a fork of the older 2.x branch of GNOME) or Xfce 4.8.0 as the default desktop environment – the GNOME Shell and KDE, which were present in LMDE Update Pack 4 from March, are noticeably absent.

Overall, the list of changes given by Lefebvre is rather short. The developer notes that the release builds on Update Pack 4, and that both the MATE/Cinnamon and Xfce editions of LMDE use the MDM display manager: "MDM will look familiar to many people, as it brings back GDM 2.20 and all its features: Remote login, configuration tools, fast-user switching, theme-ability, language selection…etc." Yahoo! has been added to the default list of search engines alongside DuckDuckGo, the search engine company that partnered with Linux Mint with the release of version 12.

More details about the release, including additional screenshots and a list of known issues, can be found in the announcement blog post. Linux Mint Debian Edition 201204 is available to download for 32- and 64-bit systems from the project's site.
