Clement Lefebvre from the Mint development team has announced the release of Linux Mint 7 (code named Gloria). Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution that aims to be user friendly and provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including support for DVD playback, Java, plug-ins and media codecs. The release is based on Ubuntu 9.04 (aka Jaunty Jackalope), the 2.6.28 Linux Kernel, X.org 7.4 and GNOME 2.26.

A new feature built into mintMenu – Suggestions, lets users quickly filter the list of installed applications with a simple search. An addition to mintInstall – Featured applications, a list of popular applications that are not currently installed on the system, allows users to install the most popular applications "in one go". The upload manager includes an updated graphical user interface (GUI) and now supports Secure Copy (SCP) and the SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP).

Linux Mint also includes a Wubi based installer for Windows called mint4win. When the LiveCD is inserted, the mint4win application runs automatically and allows Windows users to easily install Linux Mint to an existing partition, without modification. Windows multi-boot is also set up for the user. To un-install, all a user needs to do is use the Windows Add/Remove Applications tool to remove mint4win to restore the system to its previous state.

More details about the release can be found on the what's new page and in the release notes. Linux Mint 7 is available to download.
