Tux On Monday night Linus Torvalds released the seventh pre-release version (RC7) of Linux 2.6.39. In the release email he suggests that this will be the last release candidate, assuming that no major problems surface; if this proves to be the case and Torvalds holds to his usual routine, it would seem likely that Linux 2.6.39 will be released in the first half of next week.

The "Coming in 2.6.39" Kernel Log mini-series gives an overview of the changes and innovations that Linux 2.6.39 will bring. The final part of the series, covering Drivers, was published today; the series comprised:

  1. Network drivers and infrastructure
  2. Storage and file systems
  3. Architecture and infrastructure
  4. Drivers

Greg Kroah-Hartman was also busy on Monday night, releasing the stable kernel version 2.6.38.6 and the long-term kernel versions 2.6.32.40 and 2.6.33.13. As per usual, the stable and long-term kernels include a handful of small fixes and improvements that have already been incorporated into the pre-release versions of 2.6.39. Changes included to eliminate security problems are often not mentioned explicitly; most Linux users can ignore the calls in the release emails to update to one of the newer kernel versions, because distributions normally provide their own updates to fix these issues.
