US vendor EditShare has announced that the Lightworks video editor, used in Hollywood productions such as Centurion and Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, is to become available under an open source licence before the end of the year. EditShare acquired Lightworks last September and say that making the code available is part of its continued open source strategy.

Lightworks has been available since 1989 and stands out because of its intuitive user interface, its real-time synchronisation and its multi-camera editing features. The software can also exchange data with other video editors such as Avid and Final Cut. By opening the code, EditShare hopes to attract an active community of developers who will add new features to the program. An in-house developer team will check contributed code.

EditShare plans to release the source code in the third quarter of 2010 and at that time intends to set up an online marketplace where developers can offer their Lightworks plug-ins.
