The Lightspark project has announced the release of version 0.5.0 of its open source Flash player. According to the developers, this latest update now offers support for newer Flash files (SWF 9+) and brings overall stability improvements to the alternative Flash player.

The release candidate for 0.5.0 from earlier this month added an SDL-based audio backend and initial support for the Grooveshark online music streaming service, as well as improvements to FFMpeg-based media playback. Other changes include OpenGL ES (GLES) compatibility updates, better shader performance, and support for audio volume, AMF3 serialisation and dynamic text. Users running the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they find.

More information about the release can be found in a post on the Technology Temple blog. Lightspark 0.5.0 is available to download as an Ubuntu package from a Launchpad PPA repository. Fedora 13 packages are also available for the i686 platform and installation instructions are provided on the project's wiki page. Hosted on Launchpad, Lightspark is licensed under the GPLv3.
