Lightspark logo The developers of the Lightspark project have released version 0.5.6 of their open source Flash player implementation. According to Lightspark lead developer Alessandro Pignotti, the new build includes fixes for YouTube support and adds experimental support for Google Street View.

Lightspark now supports version 10 of the Firefox web browser and includes support for PNG images, custom serialisation/deserialisation and RPC (NetConnection::call) – the RPC and serialisation features were written as part of an ongoing effort to support highly interactive and complex Flash games like FarmVille. Some of these features were included in version 0.5.5, which was never released; Pignotti says that he was "too lazy to publish", but promises that "it will not happen again".

More details about the update can be found in the release notes and in the announcement post on the Technology Temple blog. Lightspark 0.5.6 is available to download from Canonical's Launchpad open source project hosting site; at the time of writing, the Launchpad PPA repository has yet to be updated with the new release. Source code for Lightspark is licensed under the LGPLv3.
