The developers of LibreOffice have announced the availability of the second release candidate for version 4.0 of the open source office suite. LibreOffice 4.0.0 RC2 includes several incremental improvements and bug fixes and a final release candidate is expected later in the week. The developers have used the 4.0 release to rebase their office suite on the Apache OpenOffice code.

Oracle's contribution of OpenOffice.org to the Apache Software Foundation and the resulting placing of all of its code under the Apache License has presented a good opportunity for a last rebase of the LibreOffice code. The licensing position of Apache OpenOffice is much clearer than that of the older OpenOffice.org codebase, which also, for example, included GPLv2-only licensed components. This gives the developers a clear licensing story and enables them to have the LibreOffice code available under a range of copyleft licences that include LGPLv3 or later, GPLv3 or later, AGPLv3 or later and version 2.0 or later of the MPL.

The rebasing work is now done and the developers are eliminating bugs before the final released of 4.0. Changes in LibreOffice 4.0.0 RC2 include a fix to the zoom in Writer so that it no longer jumps to the wrong place in the document when the zoom is changed. The Writer and Fax wizards have also been fixed and several user interface elements like border lines have been corrected.

LibreOffice 4.0 is currently in code freeze and is expected to be released in the second week of February. With it also comes a cleanup of the office suite's API, which the developers hope will allow for more involved changes of the API infrastructure in the future, and a new UI layout system which should offer more compact dialogs. A detailed list with the changes in the API is available from The Document Foundation's wiki.

A list of the changes in LibreOffice 4.0.0 RC2 is also available and the release can be downloaded from the LibreOffice web site.
