LibreOffice 3.5.3 update arrives with fixes

The Document Foundation has announced the availability of LibreOffice 3.5.3, the third maintenance update to the 3.5.x branch of the open source office suite. As expected, the new stable release adds no new features, instead fixing more than 60 bugs found in the core of the program. These include problems when importing PDF, PPTX, RTF and DOCX files, as well as a crashing bug.

In the release announcement, Document Foundation director Italo Vignoli also points out that 34 new developers contributed code in April, the most since January 2011. Vignoli goes on to note that eight of these developers have already committed code more than once and that ten of them are students taking part in this year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) event. Over the summer, the GSoC student developers will be working with mentors on performance improvements to the Calc spreadsheet program, a new user interface for selecting templates, a Java-based GUI for an Android port, and other features.

A full list of fixes and changes in the update are provided in the release notes and in the RC1 and RC2 change logs. LibreOffice 3.5.3 is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the project's download page, and is licensed under the LGPLv3.
