Ubuntu logo The development of the next version of Ubuntu continues with the third alpha release of Karmic Koala. According to the announcement, this alpha contains software updates which "are now ready for large scale testing". Alpha 3 is one of a number of milestones which the Ubuntu developers release as they progress towards the final October release of Ubuntu 9.10.

Pre-releases like this are not recommended for anyone who needs a stable system, or is not comfortable with "occasional, even frequent breakage". Release notes for Alpha 3 are available

This release includes the GNOME 2.27.4 development release, a rewritten gdm login manager and replaces Pidgin with Empathy as the default instant messaging client. The alpha has now switched from "hal" for managing power, hot-keys, storage devices and cameras, to DeviceKit-Power, DeviceKit-disks and "udev" in preparation for the expected deprecation of "hal". GCC-4.4 is now the default compiler. Alpha 3 also features a kernel based on 2.6.31-rc3 with kernel mode setting enabled for Intel graphics and a switch from EXA acceleration to UXA. This should address the issues that dogged Ubuntu 9.04 with integrated Intel graphics chip-sets.
