The Ubuntu developers have announced their first pre-release of what will become Ununtu 9.10, Karmic Koala Alpha. According to the announcement and as expected for an alpha, the pre-release is designed as a first look at the development of Ubuntu and is not recommended for "anyone needing a stable system, or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent, breakage". The Alpha 1 release is available in Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu versions. There is though, no desktop CD version with this first alpha, only the alternate and server CD. The next alpha milestone will see a desktop CD version.

The major changes in this release, from 9.04, are the merging of changes from Debian, an update to the current Linux kernel and the GNOME desktop moved to a current development release. There are also changes in power management and the Intel Video driver. More details are available on the Karmic testing page and download links and recommendations for users who wish to test the Karmic Koala Alpha 1 are included in the announcement. The stable version of Karmic Koala, Ubuntu 9.10, is scheduled for release on October 29th.
