Kaltura logo Kaltura has announced the release of the community edition of its Open Source Online Video Platform under the Affero General Public Licence 3 (AGPL3). Kaltura says that Kaltura CE should allow users to create video streaming sites with editing, remixing, sharing, annotation and the ability to roll back changes on their own servers. The software is available from the new Kaltura.org web site.

Kaltura, launched in 2007, have been offering a hosted online video platform which uses Flash/Flex based clients to present the video content and supporting applications. The Community Edition of Kaltura includes server side components to handle content uploading, importing content from other online repositories, content and application management, encoding and image manipulation and a monitoring console, with a PHP based server. A management console, dynamic player with playlist support, uploader and a standard and advanced editor are supplied for the client side to integrate with a web site's content. The community edition can be deployed on Windows, Mac and 32/64 bit Linux systems and can be intergrated with CMS systems such as Drupal and WordPress.

The community edition was launched at OSCON 2009, where Kaltura also announced its Frenzy challenge to developers, which offers iPhones, cash prizes and a Nintendo Wii to the winners of contests to promote a self-hosted Kaltura CE site, to create an extension for Kaltura which plugs into a common CMS, or to develop a Kaltura based video application.
