The KDevelop team have announced that, after five years of development, version 4.0 of the C++ IDE for the KDE desktop environment is finally available as a stable release. With KDevelop 4.0, the developers focussed on making a C++ IDE, rather than "trying to integrate lots of languages and features half heartedly". That said, KDevelop 4.0 is providing a framework to support other languages and a PHP plugin has been also been released. The developers do say that some features of KDevelop 3.5 have been omitted, because of that C++ focus, to create an entirely new code base for the IDE.

KDevelop 4.0's new features are built on the foundation of an "excellent C++ code understanding engine" which in turn allows the IDE to give more extensive code navigation, semantic highlighting and code completion and offer several semi-automatic coding assistants to aid the developer. The Qt GUI framework is also supported with code completion that works with Qt's signals/slots mechanism. The developers say that CMake is the best supported build system for KDevelop 4.0, and offer some enhanced editor features, such as completion, highlighting and navigation, when editing CMake files. Integrated GDB support to aid in locating runtime errors and inline docmentation viewing for Qt and CMake have also been added.

The new version of KDevelop is available to download as GPL licensed source code from the projects website. Developers who have used KDevelop before will find a feature comparison page useful to determine what features have been dropped, added or enhanced. There is also a screenshot gallery of KDevelop 4.0's features in action.
