KDE Logo The KDE project has released version 4.8.1 of the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC). The new release fixes many bugs, some of which can cause serious crashes of KDE applications.

Additionally, the update includes several performance improvements for the Nepomuk semantic desktop search and many translation updates. According to the KDE team, updating should be "safe and pleasant" due to the bugfixes-only nature of the release and all users currently using KDE SC 4.8 are encouraged to update as soon as possible.

More details about the changes in this release can be found in the change log. The KDE Software Compilation is available from the repositories of most Linux distributions and the update should be distributed to users soon. In the meantime, KDE SC 4.8.1 can be downloaded in source form from the project's web site. KDE SC is licensed under a combination of the LGPLv2, BSD, MIT and X11 licences for core libraries and the GPLv2 or GPLv3 for applications.
