Two months after the most recent update to the 4.8.x branch of the KDE Software Collection (KDE SC), the project has delivered the 4.8.5 stabilisation update to the software suite. Usually, these updates are provided at monthly intervals, but the release of KDE SC 4.9 most likely delayed the scheduled publication.

This update brings bugfixes in the Dolphin file manager and a few improvements to the Kontact Suite. KDE SC 4.8.5 also brings performance improvements across all of the desktop and a bug was fixed in the console terminal emulator which could cause it to crash. The developers point out that the update should be very smooth since it only includes bug fixes and minor improvements.

More details on the changes in this release can be found in the project's release announcement and the change log. The source code for KDE SC 4.8.5 can be downloaded from the information page for the release which also includes details of how to receive binary packages of the software. The Kubuntu derivative of Ubuntu has already made the KDE SC 4.8.5 packages available in a Personal Package Archive.

KDE is licensed under a combination of the LGPLv2, BSD, MIT and X11 licences for core libraries and the GPLv2 or GPLv3 for applications.
