KDE Logo The KDE Project release team has announced the arrival of version 4.6.1 of the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC), the first point update to the latest major release of the popular Linux and Unix desktop. According to the developers, this maintenance release of the free open source K Desktop Environment (KDE) includes a variety of translation updates and bug fixes for the Plasma Desktop and Netbook workspaces, the KDE Applications and the KDE Platform.

KDE SC 4.6.1, code named "Helga", is the first in a series of monthly service updates and the first version "served mainly out of KDE's new Git-based development infrastructure". Changes include fixes for issues affecting the Okular universal document viewer, the Dolphin file manager and the Plasma workspaces. However, the developers note that the change log is incomplete – users can find a complete list of changes by browsing the Subversion log. All users are advised to upgrade.

More details about the first point update to KDE SC 4.6 can be found in the official release announcement and on the KDE SC 4.6.1 Info Page. Source packages for self-compilation and binary packages for various Linux distributions are available to download from the project's website. KDE is licensed under a combination of the LGPLv2, BSD, MIT and X11 licences for core libraries and the GPLv2 or GPLv3 for applications.
