KDE SC 4.5.5 update released

KDE Logo The KDE Community has issued version 4.5.5 of the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC), the fifth and final point update to the latest major release of the popular Linux and Unix desktop. As with previous monthly service updates, the 4.5.5 release contains no new features. The stabilisation and maintenance release of the free open source K Desktop Environment (KDE) includes a variety of translation updates and bug fixes for the the Plasma desktop and Netbook workspaces, the KDE Applications and the KDE Platform. All users are encouraged to upgrade.

The next major release, version 4.6.0, will feature significant improvements to desktop search and revamped activities in the Plasma Desktop, as well as major performance boosts to window management and desktop effects. Other changes include enhancements to the Doplhin file manager, as well as the introduction of Akonadi in Kontact 4.6, a Git plug-in for Dolphin and improved mobile device support. The latest development preview of the next major release is KDE SC 4.6 Release Candidate 2 from the 5th of January. The final version of KDE SC 4.6.0 is scheduled to arrive on the 26th of January.

Source code for self-compilation and binary packages for various Linux distributions are available to download from the project's web site. KDE is licensed under a combination of the LGPLv2, BSD, MIT and X11 licences for core libraries and the GPLv2 or GPLv3 for applications.
