The KDE community has announced that the KOffice project will in future be known as the Calligra Suite. According to the announcement, "The new name reflects the wider value of the KOffice technology platform beyond just desktop office applications".

The new name, along with the new names for each of the KDE productivity applications, reflect a new stage in the development of these free productivity and creativity applications for desktop and mobile devices. The applications in the Calligra Suite are grouped into Productivity, Management and Graphics.

Words Logo The Productivity group contains a word processor called Words, a spreadsheet app called Tables, a presentation program called Stage, a flowcharter called Flow and a database app called Kexi. The Management group currently contains only a project manager called Plan and the Graphics group contains two drawing applications: Krita for pixel based image editing and Karbon for vector images.

The KDE developers say that more applications will be added to the suite as the number of contributors grows. The Calligra Suite uses the new Calligra Office Engine which makes it easy to target new platforms and create new user experiences. At present there are two experiences; the desktop UI and FreOffice, which the KDE developers say is the only free mobile office suite available.

The creation of the new Calligra Suite is accompanied by a shift from Subversion to Git although the project will continue to use the KDE bugtracker, forums and community wikis.
