The Joomla! developers have released version 2.5.5 of the open source content management system. The new version is predominantly a security update but also includes several new features.

Joomla! 2.5.5 allows users to copy templates under a new name and modify them later on. A new plugin for user profiles allows administrators to show terms of service agreements and require users to sign off on them. Administrators can also restrict which user names are available and how often users can request to reset their passwords during a given amount of time.

Other new features in this version are a visit counter for redirected pages that shows how often the old URL is still being visited, and, improved module management. Image handling has also been improved with the ability to upload multiple files in one go and with image previews on form fields.

Since Joomla! 2.5.5 fixes two security updates and several bugs, the developers are recommending users to update as soon as possible. Downloads are available for full installation packages and for an incremental archive which only includes the files changed from version 2.5.4. Detailed installation instructions are available on the Joomla! wiki. Joomla is licensed under the GPLv2.

Update 20-06-12: One day after the release of Joomla! 2.5.5, the project has announced version 2.5.6 which includes important bug fixes. The update can be downloaded from within the software's own update manager or directly from the Joomla! web site.
