Following unofficial reports at the end of last month, cloud OS start-up Jolicloud has confirmed that it plans to release its own netbook computer. Known as the "Jolibook", the custom netbook will run version 1.1 of the company's Jolicloud OS, which is based on the Long Term Support (LTS) version of Ubuntu.

The Jolibook will come preloaded with the Chromium web browser, Facebook support, Spotify, the VLC Media Player, Skype and a number of other applications. Under the hood, the device will feature an Atom N550 processor, Intel's latest dual core CPU aimed at netbooks, a "gorgeous screen" and a 250 GB hard drive – an interesting choice given that the OS is primarily aimed at cloud computing.

While further details have yet to be confirmed, the Jolicloud developers say that more details will be available on the Jolicloud site soon. According to TechCrunch, the Jolibook should first appear in the UK later this month.

Jolicloud is a free, Linux-based operating system aimed specifically at netbook computers and the cloud that includes all of the necessary drivers for many netbooks. It features built-in social networking support, allowing users to collaborate and share with their friends, and gives users the option to back up their data to the cloud.

The Jolicloud OS is licensed under the GNU General Public Licence (GPL) and other open source licences.

Update: Jolicloud has now posted official images of the netbook to its Flickr page.

Update (22-11-10): The Jolibook, manufactured by Vye, is now available on Amazon UK. According to Engadget, the first batch of UK orders should begin shipping today. A first look video is available on CrunchGear.
