A proposal to move the Jetty web server and servlet container project from its current home at Webtide to become an Eclipse Foundation project has been made by Greg Wilkins, CTO and CEO of Webtide. Wilkins is proposing that Apache licensed Jetty 6.0 remain where it is currently hosted and managed, but that the upcoming Jetty 7.x be hosted by Eclipse and dual licensed under the Apache 2.0 and Eclipse Public licences. Wilkins plans to present the proposal to the Eclipse Foundation in January 2009, aiming to move the code to Eclipse in March and release Jetty 7 in time for JavaOne in June.

Jetty is a compact, lightweight and simple web server designed to be embedded into applications of all sizes, and can be found within many Java products, providing web services for those applications. The move to the Eclipse Foundation will, according to Wilkins, diminish the perception that Jetty is a one man, one company project, though he plans to lead the project for the foreseeable future. It should also improve the quality of Jetty releases with more rigorous release policies and an improved legal status from the Foundation's procedures.

Wilkins, along with other Jetty community members, had worried that such a move would see the Eclipse Foundation demand changes to the core of Jetty to make it more OSGi compliant, but says "It has become clear that they truly are component minded, and that while they are keen for Jetty and OSGi to work well together, they are not about to insist that we change the core."
