Jetty developer acquired by Intalio

WebTide the ten person company behind Jetty, the open source Java appliction server, has been acquired by Intalio, who produce software to enable private clouds and optional cloud-integrated BPM (Business Process Management) and CRM applications. According to the announcement, Webtide will become a subsidiary of Intalio.

Jetty, which is available under the Apache and Eclipse licenses, is to continue under the leadership of Greg Wilkins, founder of Webtide, and Jan Bartel, while one employee, Adam Lieber will move to Intalio to become their Open Source Officer, where he will manage the company's open source initiatives such as Apache Buildr and Apache ODE. Intalio say they decided to acquire Webtide after evaluating other web application server vendors and their products. They found that Jetty was rapidly becoming a very popular Java application server, and its use in projects, scaling from phone based web servers up to Google's AppEngine, Apache Hadoop and Google Wave, offered them a leading position in the future of web applications.

“Intalio understands that Jetty must continue to be developed with a large degree of independence for it to remain a best-in-class project within the open source community,” said Greg Wilkins, who pointed to Intalio's previous successful adoption of open source companies. As a hint of things to come, Lieber is quoted as saying "Intalio is now funding the development of a Jetty-powered implementation of the Google Wave Federation Protocol, which we expect to release very soon".
