JavaScript library qooxdoo reinvents itself

The open source qooxdoo JavaScript library has reinvented itself. The project, which primarily has been developed by employees of 1&1, will move from only supporting desktops to also covering mobile, web and server use as well. The developers say that they are regrouping the library's components to make functions usable independently of each other.

Qooxdoo's familiar core elements will be integrated within the Desktop component, which includes a GUI framework for browser applications in desktop environments. The new Mobile component brings together modules developed over the last few months for mobile web applications. The Server component is compatible with Node.js and Rhino and offers object-oriented features such as classes, mixins and interfaces. Finally, the Web component contains a platform-independent library for DOM manipulation.

1&1 first decided to develop a new JavaScript framework back in 2004. The first version of qooxdoo was unveiled in early 2005. Version 1.0 finally appeared in December 2009, with an emphasis on AJAX-based graphical user interfaces.

Qooxdoo is available for download under a dual licence, meaning that users can choose to license it either under the LGPL or the EPL. Developers can find out more information about the project on GitHub.
