With the launch of JavaFX 1.0, Linux and Solaris users were left out in the cold, as the initial release was only Windows and Mac OS X. Sun are promising versions for Linux and Solaris soon, but not soon enough for some Linux hackers.

Weiqi Gao, who had previously written on how to get the preview versions of JavaFX running on Linux has now posted instructions on how to take the Mac OS X archive and get it running on Linux. The instructions do only result in limited support for JavaFX. When Gao carried out a similar process with the preview release of JavaFX, everything apparently ran except for the native video codec software, but as JavaFX applications are meant to be media rich, that could be quite a limitation.
