Sun has released new versions of Java. Available to download now are versions JDK and JRE 6 Update 11JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 17SDK and JRE 1.4.2_19 as well as SDK and JRE 1.3.1_24. Sun says it has fixed several security holes in the new versions, but does not go into any detail. The release of Java 6 Update 11 is also the prelude to tomorrows official release of the JavaFX platform.

Since the release of Java 6 Update 10, the installation routines have relied on the patch-in-place configuration to make sure that older Java versions are overwritten. This is designed to prevent a situation where a system has several installations in different locations, since this can sometimes cause security problems.

However, when we tested this here at heise Security, the official installation routines for Java 6 Update 11 created a new directory without removing the old one. If this happens, users should delete their old directories manually.
