Jaspersoft Logo Open source business intelligence software specialist Jaspersoft has joined the Eclipse Foundation and presented Jaspersoft Studio, which integrates into the Eclipse IDE. The development environment enables developers to build reports and integrate them into existing applications free of charge. Potential data sources for reports include relational, "big data" and NoSQL databases, as well as text files.

Jaspersoft Studio Logo Jaspersoft Studio is available free of charge, and a commercial variant is planned to be released later this year. The development of Jaspersoft's iReport Designer is to be unaffected by the new project and continue as before. In fact, the company's product web site states that the new product is a port of iReport for the Eclipse platform. Since both products are based on the JasperReports tool, the same reports can be processed with either of them.

Jaspersoft joining the Eclipse Foundation came as much as a surprise as the joining of PaaS provider CloudBees, which was announced earlier this week, as both open source companies' portfolios include products that compete with Eclipse projects. For instance, Jenkins core developer Kohsuke Kawaguchi works for CloudBees while the Foundation, on the other hand, is now home to the Hudson continuous integration system, of which Jenkins is a fork, as an Eclipse project. Jaspersoft competitor Actuate has been the main contributor to the Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (BIRT) project at Eclipse.org for a number of years.

The Eclipse Foundation's Ian Skerrett has welcomed both new members, pointing out that the organisation is vendor-neutral and welcomes all companies, "even some that might compete with our own Eclipse projects", for the benefit of the Eclipse community.
