JRuby developers move to EngineYard

JRuby logo Citing the uncertainty surrounding Oracle's plans for Sun, the leading JRuby developers Charles Nutter, Thomas Enebo and Nick Sieger are reported to have left Sun and will be joining EngineYard. EngineYard provides commerical hosting for Ruby on Rails applications and is active in supporting elements of Ruby's maintenance.

According to Nutter "We had no evidence Oracle wouldn't support JRuby, but we didn't have any evidence that they would". EngineYard says it is hiring the team to increase its expertise with the platform as it is seeing increased usage of JRuby by Java web developers and that it hopes to offer commercial JRuby support for these developers. Nutter also revealed his plans for JRuby, saying the team had made JRuby an excellent Ruby implementation, but for the next phase they want to make the language a "first class citizen" on the Java platform by improving it's integration with de facto standards such as Hibernate and formal JCP standards.

It is expected that the move will be announced officially on Charles Nutter's blog today.
