JBoss logo Red Hat is seeking a new name for its JBoss Application Server project (JBossAS). This is the upstream project that Red Hat uses as the foundation for its commercial product JBoss Enterprise Application Platform. "We believe that the time has come to change the name of our project to better reflect the changes we've seen in its reason for existence so far, but also for what's to come in the future," said JBoss technical leader Mark Little.

Red Hat's announcement at JavaOne comes from that need to avoid confusion between the project and the product. Red Hat have in the past, most famously, adopted a two-name strategy for community and commercial products with the Fedora Linux project and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Whether Red Hat intends to apply the same development model, with Fedora having cutting edge innovations and RHEL being a much more conservatively engineered product, to JBoss is unclear.

The company says it wants the community to be involved with the renaming; a voting page invites submissions for a new name until 14 October and voting on the top suggested names will run from 21 October to 1 November. The winning name will be announced during the Devoxx conference in Antwerp, Belgium during the week of 12 November.

Red Hat also announced that it is now working on its NoSQL Hibernate OGM (Object Grid Mapper) with 10Gen, makers of MongoDB. The Hibernate OGM allows NoSQL databases to be used in conjunction with the Java Persistence API (JPA) while retaining Hibernate's life cycle management, dehydration engine and Java Persistence Query Language (JP-QL). Hibernate OGM has been in development for some time, but had previously focused on interoperability with JBoss's own NoSQL Infinispan key/value store. The companies have been collaborating since May 2011 when they began working on Red Hat's OpenShift PaaS's database options.
