Red Hat has published the new JBoss Enterprise Business Rules Management System (BRMS). This open-source alternative to IBM ILOG, Oracle Haley and Visual Rules is based on the JBoss Application Server and the JBoss Drools Rules Engine. The web interface it uses and the basic repository come from the JBoss Community's Guvnor project.

Web-based authoring and management tools let users define rules to manage business processes - and they don't have to be programmers. The code is generated from the rules, so there's no need to rewrite applications code. The rules can be organised throughout a company. There is also a repository for version control of the rule artifacts. The price of a subscription to the BRMS is quoted as at least $20,000.
