The latest release of the IronPython project draws level with the 2.6.x. development series of CPython, the C-based interpreter for the Python programming language. Version 2.6 of the Python implementation for the "Common Language Infrastructure" (CLI) standard – whose most prominent implementations include Microsoft's .NET framework and its Mono open source equivalent – focuses on enhanced .NET integration and performance improvements especially in terms of startup time.

Other new features include the support of the new bytes and byte array types, decorators for classes, and advanced string formatting which reportedly ties in well with .NET's IFormattable feature. In addition, the new version features abstract base classes and supports binary literals. The IronPython developers have also fixed more than 400 bugs.

IronPython is one of Microsoft's "Dynamic Language Runtime" projects. Other projects in this field include IronRuby, Nua (Lua for the DLR), IronLisp and IronScheme. The projects are released under the Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL), which is recognised as an open source licence by the Open Source Initiative (OSI).
