IntelliJ Logo Following a public preview last month, Czech software forge JetBrains has announced the release of version 10 of its IntelliJ IDEA Java development environment. Discussing the release, IntelliJ IDEA project lead Max Shafirov said, "During the last few years we've seen a boom of new cool technologies that every developer wanted to use," adding, "And IntelliJ IDEA has been on the cutting-edge, supporting them all".

The latest version of the IDE for JVM-based and polyglot development, features support for a variety of technologies and frameworks, including Spring, GWT, Groovy / Grails and Flex / ActionScript, and adds support for Spring Roo, AspectJ and ColdFusion. The user interface and user experience have both received "significant enhancements" in both the editor, as well as the IDE itself.

Other changes include faster code indexing, new code completion behaviour with automatic invocation, and improved support for the Git and Mercurial version control systems. Maven integration has been updated to include support for Maven 3 and POM re-factorings. The company notes that the free Community Edition of IntelliJ IDEA 10 can now be used to write tests for Android applications and, customers that purchased an IntelliJ IDEA 9.x license after the 1st of November, 2010 are be eligible for a free upgrade to version 10.

Further information about the release can be found on the What's New in IntelliJ Idea 10 page. The Ultimate and Community Editions of IntelliJ IDEA 10 are available to download from the company's web site.

Licenses for IntelliJ IDEA 10 range from £77 for an Academic License to £462 for a Commercial License for the Ultimate Edition. Open source projects, as well as educational institutions and trainers, can apply for a free license for the Ultimate Edition or use the Apache 2.0 Licensed Community Edition of IntelliJ IDEA.
