Intel wants to co-develop the GCC

Three Intel employees are to contribute to the development of the GNU Compiler Collection. So far, corporate contributions to the GCC have been made by AMD and by other processor forges, while Intel focused on the development of its Intel Compiler Collection (ICC).

Still, it wouldn't be the first open source project to be supported by the giants: several IBM staff are already working full time on the Linux kernel and its hardware drivers. Intel itself has contributed code to the X.org project and maintains its own Moblin Linux distribution, now under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation, for the Atom platform.

One of the three employees has already been named. Melanie Blower has sent an email to the Free Software Foundation (FSF) to request the respective copyright assignment forms. According to the developer, the FSF prefers contributors to formally assign copyrights for major contributions. In addition to GCC, she also plans to work on the binutils, on gdb (GNU debugger) and on the glibc (GNU C library). Her compiler development experience reaches back as far as ADA.
