Chip manufacturer Intel wants to use parts of the Fedora Project Linux distribution instead of Ubuntu as the basis for the second version of Moblin (Mobile & Internet Linux Project). News of the switch was announced at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) currently underway in Portland, Oregon and reported in The Register and Phoronix. At OSCON, Dirk Hohndel, Intel's Director of Linux and Open Source Strategy, outlined details of the next version of Moblin in a presentation. Intel aims to introduce its first pre-release during the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) to be held in San Francisco from 19-21 August.

Intel is keen on using a Linux distribution that uses RPM packages and package management software. Hohndel pointed out that RPM packages include licence information; the DEB package management as used by Ubuntu and Debian doesn't have this information in the package files. By having licence information available, developers can create software collections by licence type or exclude software with certain types of licences. Hohndel went on to say that DEB based distributions can still contribute to Moblin; they'll just have one extra step – an RPM to DEB conversion process – to make use of the Moblin packages.

The Ubuntu project has already been planning for this. Ubuntu sponsor Canonical has recently released a special version for sub-notebooks, such as the Asus EEE PC, which already uses some of the Moblin project code and techniques.
