Intel announces Moblin 2.1 for smartphones

Moblin At this years annual Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, Intel has announced version 2.1 of Moblin. The Moblin project, now under the control of the Linux Foundation, is designed to provide an open source Linux based operating system that supports Intel's Atom processors and can be used on a variety of hardware, including Netbooks, Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and in-car systems.

According to Engadget, Moblin 2.1 has been reworked and optimised to work with touch screen mobile devices, including Atom processor based smartphones. The updated interface includes several widgets that feature social networking integration and a panel-based navigation system that allows users to easily switch between currently running applications. Additional details, however, have yet to be released.
