Intel and Nokia release MeeGo v1.0
Intel and Nokia have released version 1.0 of the MeeGo Core Software Platform and the MeeGo Netbook User Experience. The Linux distribution for mobile devices is the result of the February decision to merge Intel's Moblin platform and Nokia's Maemo platform under the aegis of the Linux Foundation.
The MeeGo v1.0 Core Software Platform, consists of version 2.6.33 of the Linux kernel, Udev and DeviceKit as an interface between applications and hardware, the Btrfs file system, X.org, a telephony stack, a Bluetooth stack, and various media frameworks. Based on the core platform, the MeeGo Netbook User Experience offers a custom desktop environment for netbooks, easy access to social networks, synchronisation tools and Google's Chrome web browser. The MeeGo Handset User Experience for smartphones is to follow in June. The GUI application library is Qt 4.6.2.
More details about version 1.0 can be found in the MeeGo Core Software Platform and MeeGo for Nebooks release notes. Two ISO images for Atom-based netbooks with Google Chrome or its open source Chromium variant, as well as an image of the Core Software Platform for the Nokia N900, are available to download.
From now on, the project plans to release new versions of MeeGo every six months. Scheduled for release in October, version 1.1 is planned to support, for example, touch screen devices and car infotainment systems.
