Having been sidelined earlier in the year by Nokia in favour of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7, the MeeGo mobile operating system has recently received a boost in Asia. On 12 April, at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing, Intel announced that it had established a joint Innovation Center for MeeGo with China's Tencent. A few days later, Reuters reported that South Korea's LG Electronics had joined with other technology companies in a working group to create a a handset version of the mobile operating system.

Tencent, which claims to be China's largest and most used internet service portal, and Intel have been collaborating on MeeGo development for the last year. The new Innovation Center in Shanghai is a result of that collaboration and currently employs 60 engineers. The centre will focus on developing applications for MeeGo to run on a range of devices. Games are reported to be a high priority and are a speciality of Tencent.

Other companies mentioned by Reuters in the MeeGo working group are ZTE and China Mobile. Although the stated aim of the group is to develop a handset version of MeeGo, the Reuters report quoted an LG spokesman as stating, "At this point in time LG has no definitive plans to mass produce devices with MeeGo other than car infotainment systems", however, he pointed out that LG is working with MeeGo in several different working groups.
