Intel, HP and Yahoo have announced that they are creating the Cloud Computing Test Bed as part of a joint cloud computing effort. Intel and HP are providing the hardware to populate six initial "centres of excellence" which will house between 1,000 and 4,000 processor cores each while Yahoo is to contribute open source software to run on the test bed.

The project is designed to allow researchers from academic institutions and industry test software within a full sized cloud computing infrastructure, from the low level, OS, storage and networking, up the entire stack to user facing applications.

The data centres, scheduled to go online later this year, will be hosted by the three companies in conjunction with Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany. When these centres are connected, they will provide a global cloud infrastructure for selected researchers to work with.

Yahoo's contribution is based around Apache Hadoop and Pig. Hadoop is a software platform for distributing, managing and then collecting computing work throughout a large cluster of systems, and is based around the Google MapReduce programming model. Pig, a Yahoo Research project currently being incubated at Apache, is a language designed to make effective use of the Hadoop infrastructure. It has been described as SQL for MapReduce, allowing queries to be written and then parallelised and run on the Hadoop platform.

Andrew A. Chien, vice president and director of Intel Research said "Creating large-scale test beds is important because they lower barriers to innovation and provide the opportunity to experiment and learn at scale."
