Actian logo Ingres, maker of the eponymous open sourced database, has changed its name to Actian and are repositioning the company to address "big data". The new name is derived from the word action, and the company's new platform is called the Cloud Action Platform; this offers a layer of data analysis of various sources which can trigger events or actions and communicate with "Action Apps" on mobile devices.

None of the new offerings appear to be available as open source. The company last updated the GPLv2 licensed Ingres database in October last year, but has yet to deliver on its promise of open sourcing VectorWise, its advanced in-memory query engine. Actian says that the Vectorwise enhanced database is the "on ramp" to the company's new platform.
