IcedTea 2.0 based on JDK7 – without CACAO

IcedTea logo Version 2.0 of the JDK build environment, IcedTea, has been published. The software harness enables compilation of the source code provided by the OpenJDK project using only free developer tools. This is the first version released that supports the new OpenJDK 7.

IcedTea 2.0 – or, to be more precise, IcedTea7 2.0 – offers developers a number of remedies for flaws contained in the public branch of OpenJDK 7, along with the latest security patches and several IcedTea add-ons. But users will have to do without the CACAO virtual machine for the time being, because OpenJDK 7 no longer provides the HPI interface that it needs; however, in his blog, Andrew John Hughes, release manager for IcedTea 2.0, writes that the functionality is likely to return in a future version.

The source code for the current version 2.0 of IcedTea7 can be downloaded from the project's web site, under the terms of the GPLv2.
