IPFire Logo On the third birthday of IPFire 2, the IPFire Project developers have announced the release of an update, Core Update 41, to version 2.7 of their IPFire open source firewall. IPFire is a Linux distribution that can be booted from a CD or USB drive, or installed to a computer's hard disk drive.

According to the developers, the latest release of the Linux-based firewall includes important security fixes for the bzip2 data compressor (version 1.0.6) and the GNU C Library (glibc), addressing a privilege escalation hole. In addition to updated Realtek networking drivers, the core update corrects issues under Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) and corrects a bug in the feature for deactivating outgoingfw rules. All users are encouraged to update as soon as possible.

Further information about the release can be found in the official release announcement and in the change log. IPFire 2.7 (Core 41) is available to download as an ISO image file from the project's site and an installation guide is also provided.

The next major update, version 3.0, is currently in development and is available as a first alpha. IPFire is released under version 3 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv3).
