IPFire open source firewall improves OpenVPN support

IPFire logo The IPFire project has released version 2.11 of its open source firewall. IPFire is a Linux server distribution that can be booted from a CD or USB drive, or installed to a computer's internal drive.

According to Project Leader and developer Michael Tremer, IPFire 2.11 is a major update that includes a new option to create net-to-net virtual private networks (VPNs) using OpenVPN. Previously, it was only possible to create "roadwarrior networks" using OpenVPN. Recently updated documentation about OpenVPN on IPFire can be found on the project's wiki.

Other changes include the addition of support for the IKEv2 protocol for IPsec-VPNs for "a more secure, faster and easier connection of the tunnels", and a new way to add static entries to the routing table. Tremer also asks users and companies running IPFire to donate to the project to help pay for hosting services and other development costs.
