Hyperic has released version 4.0 of its free Hyperic HQ network management solution. According to the vendor, Hyperic HQ 4.0, which now supports managing virtual Xen environments, is the first monitoring software able, not only to handle local virtual machines and servers, but also virtual machines in Amazon's EC2. The software is now available to download free of charge; an enterprise variety with additional features and support is available under licence.

As part of the release, it was announced that Amazon plans to offer Hyperic HQ Enterprise 4.0 as a preconfigured Amazon machine image on the EC2 via its DevPay service before the end of the month. This allows users to run the monitoring solution in the Elastic Compute Cloud.

In its announcement of Hyperic HQ 4.0, Hyperic points out that the main advantage of running servers in the Cloud is that the rented computing power can quickly be adjusted to varying resource requirements. However, this requires the constant monitoring offered by the new version of the network management software.
