Eclipse Logo The Eclipse Foundation's annual release train, this year dubbed Helios, as planned, includes version 3.6 of Eclipse, the free development environment. Helios includes 39 projects with more than 33 million lines of code – the work of approximately 490 committers. Discussing the release, Eclipse Foundation Executive Director Mike Milinkovich said, "The Helios release is another fantastic effort by the Eclipse committer community", noting that,"Besides the feat of coordinating such a large development effort, Helios introduces important innovations".

Among the projects is a Linux IDE package which integrates the C / C++ tools available for Linux, such as Valgrind, RPM, GCov, OProfile, GProf and the GNU Autotools. The new MarketPlace client reportedly allows developers to select and install plug-ins from an "app store". An improved version of the JavaScript Development Tools (JSDT) now contains a framework which enables developers to integrate such debuggers as Rhino and Firebug. Version 2.0 of Riena, a platform for developing client-server applications using the Eclipse Rich Client Platform and Equinox, is also included and features, for example, automated application tests.

The latest version of Eclipse includes a number of new features and improvements, such as feature based configurations and version 1.0 of the Xtext programming language framework. Other changes include resource, target platform, Java IDE improvements and Git support.

A top ten list of new Eclipse Helios features is available in a post by developer Ian Bull on the Eclipse Source blog. Eclipse 3.6 is available to download from the Eclipse web page and is released under the Eclipse Foundation Software User Agreement.
