HTML Working Group Reinforced

Tim Berners-Lee has announced the strengthening of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) HTML Working Group. Chris Wilson of Microsoft has stepped down as co-chair. The remaining co-chair, Sam Ruby of IBM, will now be joined by new co-chairs; Paul Cotton of Microsoft, and Maciej Stachowiak of Apple. Cotton is a Partner Group Manager at Microsoft, managing the Web Services Standards and Partners team responsible for interoperability. Stachowiak manages the WebKit WebApps Team and is a long time developer on the open source browser engine, having worked on the early development of Safari.

Berners-Lee explains that the move to three co-chairs reflects the amount of work to be done to make HTML5 a success. HTML5 is being developed and promoted by the W3C and the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG), comprised of browser developers from Google, Apple, Mozilla, Opera and others. HTML 5 is intended to replace the 1999 HTML 4.01 standard and add the functionality required by modern web applications.
