HP to certify Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server on select ProLiant systems

At the OpenStack Summit & Conference, currently taking place in San Francisco, Canonical has announced that HP will certify the next server edition release of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, 12.04 LTS, for its ProLiant systems. According to Canonical, the move marks the first time that Ubuntu will be a supported server operating system and means that users can contact HP for hardware warranty support.

In a statement, HP VP of Infrastructure Software and Blades Scott Farrand said: "Customers running Linux want choice when deploying an operating system that can support their demanding workloads," adding that, "As an emerging Linux distribution, Ubuntu on HP ProLiant servers offers the scalability and flexibility to manage big data, cloud and hyperscale applications." To start with, only select HP ProLiant servers will be certified, including the latest Generation 8 (Gen8) systems. The two companies also note that, in future, they "will work to identify joint opportunities as well as pre-and post-sales deployments".

Currently in development, Ubuntu 12.04 "Precise Pangolin" will be a Long Term Support (LTS) release that will be supported for five years, the final version of which is scheduled to arrive on 26 April. Once released, the ProLiant systems will be added to the HP Certification and Support Matrix.
