At its webOS CONNECT event which took place in London yesterday, HP announced the release of a developer beta for version 3.0 of the Software Development Kit (SDK) for the Linux-based webOS mobile operating system. According to the company, the early access program release is specifically targeted at its upcoming TouchPad tablet device.

HP's TouchPad tablet features a 24.6 cm (9.7") multi-touch display with a resolution of 1024 by 768 and a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera. It's powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU and includes 802.11b/g/n wireless, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and comes in capacities of either 16 GB or 32 GB. 3G-enabled models of the device will also support built-in GPS. A UK release date for the HP TouchPad has yet to be confirmed.

Version 3.0 of the webOS SDK developer beta is available to download through HP's webOS Developer Early Access Program. More information on webOS development, including how to sign up as a webOS Developer or Community member, can be found at developer.palm.com.

Update: According to a report from PreCentral.net, webOS 3.0, code named "Enyo", will only be available for the Pre 2, as well as the yet to be released Pre 3, Veer and TouchPad; older "legacy" devices such as the original Palm Pre and Pixi, as well as the Plus editions, will not be supported. Apps created using HP's Enyo framework will be cross-platform and will work with iOS, Symbian, BlackBerry and Android devices.

HP is also said to have confirmed that the desktop version of webOS, which HP has said it will ship in its future range of computers, will be HP-only. Additionally, from version 3.0, users will be able to share a single Palm Profile across multiple devices.
