Gordon: Flash without a Flash Player

Gordon Flash using JavaScript to convert into SVG. Despite the availability of various alternatives, Adobe's Flash Player is still almost unrivalled as a playback environment for SWF files. Yesterday, developers started the new and very ambitious Gordon project, which aims to interpret SWF files using browser technology only. Gordon uses JavaScript to translate Flash files into the SVG vector format. The open source JavaScript library created by Munich-based developer Tobias Schneider is freely available under the MIT license.

Gordon supports Firefox, Chrome and Safari – it even works on iPhones, which still don't include Flash Player support. Opera support is in development. So far, however, Gordon can only handle a fraction of SWF applications; its range of features is said to be equivalent to that of SWF version 1 while SWF is currently at version 10. Several functional demos of Gordon containing simple animations and static images are already available.
